A Fast Finite Element Modelling Tool for Surgical Simulation

This paper present an algorithm based on finite element modelling of 3D solid volumetric, suitable for real-time animation and for haptic interaction, particularly for surgical simulator. The techniques used now by most surgical simulators are based on approximate methods that do not represent an accurate behaviour of the deformable bodies. The finite element method (FEM) is an alternative because of its accuracy, but it is computationally expensive. In this paper we address this problem by proposing the notion of εmesh radius in analogy with the similar notion used in the theory of adaptive meshing.
